SEBI – Securities and Exchange Board of India.

It is a statutory regulatory body to regulate the securities market of India and it was established on 12th April 1992 by the government of India. It protects the interests of investors in securities.

The functioning of the mutual funds, stock market etc. are regulated by SEBI.

The Headquarters

The headquarter of SEBI is in Mumbai.

It has four regional offices in Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.

SEBI has also opened local offices at Bangalore and Jaipur.

History

SEBI was established on 12th April 1992 by the government of India.

The statuary powers was given in 1992 with SEBI Act 1992 which passed by the Government of India.

Objectives of SEBI

The main objective of SEBI is to protect the interests of all investors in securities and the parties involved in trading. The other objectives of SEBI are:

To protect the rights of the investors

To examine the tasks of the stock exchange

To describe the code of conduct for underwriters, brokers and other intermediaries.

To control the fraudulent practices by balancing between self regulation and statutory regulations.

Powers of SEBI

To function properly, SEBI has some necessary powers and which are:

  • Checks the price manipulation.
  • For performing its function, it imposes charges and other fees on the intermediaries.
  • In one or more stock exchanges, it ensure certain companies for listing their shares.

Members of SEBI

SEBI is managed by as per below given members:

The Union Government of India nominates the Chairman of Board.

The two members of the Ministry of Central Government deals with Finance and Companies Act administration.

The one member is from the Reserve Bank of India.

The central Government appoints the other five members and among them three of them must be whole time members.
