Full form of TRP is Television Rating Point.

TRP is a device which is connected to the TV set in viewers’ houses to measure impressions and popularity of television programs.

TRP is used to judge that which program is viewed most in TV set. This used to measure the interests of the viewers and shows the popularity of the particular program.

TV shows with higher TRP shown that which TV show is viewed by a large number of viewers. Because the data is very useful for advertisers, so they can advertise  during the programs with higher TRPs.

The TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) manages the TRP ratings In India. Currently,  INTAM (Indian Television Audience Measurement) is the only rating agency in India for calculating TRP.

Methods for calculating TRP

INTAM uses two methods for calculating TRP:

1. Frequency Monitoring Method

In this method, The device  is connected to the TV set in viewers’ houses to measure impressions and popularity of television programs.

This device is known as People’s meter and records the time and program that the viewer watches on specific day. Then after the average is taken from 30-days viewership status.

2. Picture Matching Method

In this method, People’s meter records a small portion of the picture continuously  which is watched on a specific television set. After that the information  is gathered and used to calculate the national rating. This method is more reliable and comparatively new in India.
